Camera & Scanning
Scanning and photo capture are Mobile App features.
Nearly all scanning problems are one of three things: permission, the card itself, or the rabbit not being on that phone yet. Work down to your symptom.
The camera will not open
Symptom: you open Barn Scan or the camera and get a permission prompt, a black screen, or nothing.
- Grant camera permission. The app asks the first time. If you declined, the screen offers a button to ask again — use that rather than hunting through settings.
- If asking again does nothing, the OS has stopped prompting. Grant camera access to OmniBurrow in your phone's system settings, then reopen the screen.
- If the screen stays blank after granting, back out and open it again. The camera occasionally needs the screen remounting after a first grant.
- Another app may be holding the camera. Close anything else using it and try again.
You do not need a connection for any of this — Barn Scan works entirely offline.
A QR code will not scan
Symptom: the camera is running but nothing happens when you point it at a card.
- Light. Glare on a laminated card and deep shade are the two usual culprits. Angle the card away from direct light rather than adding more.
- Distance. Fill a good part of the frame with the code; too close will not focus.
- Card condition. A faded, wet, chewed, or creased card may no longer be readable. Reprint it.
- Print quality. A code printed very small, or scaled down on a busy page, can lose definition. The 4 × 6 layout has the largest code.
Do not fight it. The scan screen has a Search manually option — type a name or ear tag, pick the rabbit, and carry on in the same session without losing your place.
The scan does not match a rabbit
Symptom: the code scans, but OmniBurrow says the rabbit is not in your herd.
The QR encodes the record's ID, and the phone resolves it against its own local copy. So a scan that resolves to nothing almost always means one of:
- That rabbit has not synced to this phone yet. Most likely if it was added on the web app or on another device recently. Open Sync Diagnostics and run a sync.
- The rabbit was deleted. A card printed before a deletion still scans, but there is nothing to resolve to.
- The card is from a different account. Someone else's cage card will not resolve against your herd — by design.
- The code is not an OmniBurrow cage card. Barn Scan accepts a full web profile URL, an app deep link, or a bare record ID. A QR from anywhere else will not parse.
Cards for litters scan too, so a card that resolves to a litter rather than a rabbit is not a fault.
Photos will not attach
Symptom: a photo you took does not appear, or stays marked as syncing.
- Photos taken offline are held on the phone and upload when you have signal. The gallery marks them SYNCING until they land.
- A photo marked ERROR has a retry on the row. Diagnostics also lists failed media uploads with their own retry.
- A rabbit must exist before it can hold photos. On the web app, save the rabbit first and reopen it.
- If uploads never complete, check whether your subscription has lapsed — nothing reaches the server while access is ended, though nothing is lost either. See Plans, Trial & Billing.
Remember that offline photo viewing depends on having already viewed the photo on that phone — images cache as you scroll past them, not all at once. See Photos & Media.
